The most important information in brief:

Inclusion Criteria:
Main Inclusion Criterion: Impulse control disorders and related behavioral disorders in Parkinson’s patients.

Exclusion criteria:
Main exclusion criterion: surgical contraindications for deep brain stimulation surgery.

Overview:

  • Duration of study: approx. 13 months.
  • Number of clinic visits: minimum 4, maximum 8.
  • Intervals between visits: Initially every 1.5 to 3 months, later every 3 to 6 months.
  • Procedure of the visits:
    • some visits are made by phone or video call
    • Personal visits to the clinic: Allow 2-3 hours (at the beginning and after 3, 6 and 12 months).
  • Questionnaires: some of the questionnaires will be completed by you yourself, possibly with the support of the doctors/study staff.
  • Language tests on the computer: 3 tests at the beginning of the study, after 6 and 12 months.
  • Group division:
    The participants will be randomly divided into two groups:
    • DBS group: Deep brain stimulation plus the best possible medical treatment (according to published consensus criteria).
    • BMT group: best possible medical treatment (according to published consensus criteria).
